Challenge: Teaching democracy during a heated election cycle

Third grade students at Boulder Country Day School are stepping forward as champions of positive school climate by running a school-wide election with respect and enthusiasm. The candidates are two guinea pigs. Before you dismiss this exercise as silly, think of how much students can learn. From creating posters, t-shirts, promotional videos, voter registration booths, polling centers, and all kinds of other initiatives critical to the electoral process to ensuring that only registered voters get to place vote, these students are experiencing electoral politics and campaigning at its best. And it goes beyond their classroom. Students have written speeches for the candidates and are visiting each grade to educate the other students about the process as well as the candidates, encouraging questions and curiosities and advocating for participation regardless of age or viewpoints of the prospective voters. Creating an environment where positivity is the norm rather than the exception, being inclusive rather than exclusive, and coming together instead of separating themselves into camps behind walls of rhetoric, these students are setting an example for their school mates, their community, and beyond. Voting took place on November 8th.

Boulder Dance Store, Boulder Body Wear, moves to Lafayette

Champions for Children Awards

Blue Sky Bridge hosted its 6th annual awards ceremony “Champions for Children” as a way to recognize individuals in the Boulder community fighting child abuse. The event was held at Rueben’s Burger Bistro with drinks and appetizers generously donated by owner, Rueben Verplank. Guests were also invited to stay for dinner where a portion of sales benefited Blue Sky Bridge. There were a total of eight award winners spread among five categories – Community Outreach, Leadership, Advocacy, Community Supporter, and Champion for Children.

This year there were four winners in the Community Supporter Award category: Andy Bush, Real Estate Committee Chair, Josh Fiester, Real Estate Committee, Carey Kerschner, Capital Campaign Committee Chair, and Cheryl McConnell, A Moveable Feast Committee Chair. These individuals were selected for showing outstanding, selfless support of Blue Sky Bridge’s mission and services. The final award, Champion for Children Award, went to Don Dillard, Detective for the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, for exceeding expectations on behalf of children experiencing maltreatment. The Champion for Children Award is given specifically to someone who conducts investigations of child abuse, provides support to families, educates our community, and performs outstanding services.

“Blue Sky Bridge works tirelessly to fight child abuse in Boulder County, but without a doubt, we can’t do it without our community of supporters,” said Executive Director, Gina Maione Eearles. “We work as a multidisciplinary team, bringing together law enforcement, the DA’s Office, HHS, and others, so that we can respond quickly and appropriately to allegations of child abuse. The team is what makes us successful.” It is estimated that 1 in 10 children in Boulder County are sexually abused before their 18th birthday, and only 10% of those children will ever tell an adult. For anyone in attendance that night, there is no question that Blue Sky Bridge and their “Champions” are fighting hard to protect Boulder County’s children.
