How Melton Design Build teamed up with two world class athletes to
create a space for fitness, function and family.

When the time came to build themselves a home base, Tim O’Donnell and Mirinda Carfrae needed far more than just a house. The couple, who are world champion triathletes, live a life full to the brim with training and traveling, and their busy lifestyle demands a home tailored to support it. They sought a sanctuary to keep up with their grueling training schedules, a comfortable place to host guests and a spacious home to support their family. Boulder-based Melton Design Build (MDB) took on the project, an ideal partnership that afforded both parties a stress-free experience not often seen in custom home building.

Nicknamed the “Training Paradise,” the couple’s stunning custom home is nestled at the base of the foothills, providing quick and easy access to local trails. To further facilitate the couple’s fitness demands, MDB equipped the home with a dedicated exercise room, complete with extensive equipment storage. Heated concrete floors run underfoot, keeping the space comfortable year round. Indoors or out, the couple is never more than a few feet away from an elite training opportunity.

As Project Manager Shawn Kenne details, the home boasts five bedrooms, including an expansive guest suite and two impressive master bedrooms. The rooms are separated by level, all elegantly connected by a stunning staircase made of white oak block floating treads—a perfect complement to the home’s white oak hardwood flooring. One unquestionable standout of the home is the great room, designed with an open floor plan that includes the kitchen, living room and dining room. The room enjoys a slew of unique elements, including a stacked limestone and walnut fireplace, and a striking wine storage display. To top it off, the dining area features a NanaWall—a glass door that folds away to allow a seamless connection between the great room and the Colorado sunshine.

Renee Urbanowicz, Senior Interior Designer at MDB, describes the home as traditional with a modern twist. The couple’s style is fairly traditional, which is reflected in much of the cabinetry,
hardware and furniture. To infuse an organic feel, barn wood doors are stationed throughout the home, and barn wood siding adorns the exterior. Though the home’s color palette tends toward neutral, Urbanowicz incorporated pops of bright red and deep blue throughout, mirroring the vibrant personalities of the clients themselves. Urbanowicz, inspired by the couple’s lifestyle, wanted to create a space that fit them well.

Though the project did face a few obstacles, including redrawing property lines, both Kenne and Urbanowicz attribute its overwhelming success to the decisive, understanding nature of the clients. The couple’s “training paradise” is a direct reflection of their unique lifestyle, and of the knowledge, talent and efforts of the MDB team to bring their vision to life.
