Rowdy Mermaid Kombucha Serves A New Fermented Favorite
It can be easy to assume that the craft beverage scene in Boulder is monopolized solely by craft beer. However, there is more than one delicious fermented beverage of choice to be imbibed here in Boulder, and local business Rowdy Mermaid Kombucha is here to introduce kombucha into our lives.
Located off Pearl Parkway here in Boulder, Rowdy Mermaid Kombucha began when Jamba Dunn, founder and CEO, began brewing kombucha at home after his daughter started showing an interest in the beverage. Having previously brewed beer at home as a relaxation method, Dunn wanted to learn more about the process of making kombucha.
“Part of what I love about kombucha is that it’s so complicated,” says Dunn.
In 2012, Dunn decided that he wanted to brew kombucha full time and, in April 2014, Rowdy Mermaid Kombucha opened its doors. With a named inspired by the—as Dunn would describe it—slightly out of control swimming technique of his daughter and a vision to brew quality, authentic kombucha for adults, Rowdy Mermaid quickly aligned itself with the craft industry in Boulder through their openness about their ingredients and the authenticity of their company culture and vision.
While many people have heard of and tried kombucha, it’s a drink whose definition eludes most.
“Kombucha is a fermented tea beverage made with yeast and living probiotic bacteria,” says Dunn.
At Rowdy Mermaid, their kombucha has flavors that are dryer than most with low acidity and that are infused with a variety of herbs and fresh flowers, making it palatable for a wide audience.
There are many things that make Rowdy Mermaid unique not just to Boulder, but to the kombucha industry as a whole. Rowdy Mermaid is made from Colorado snowmelt and was the first kombucha brewery to release a caffeine free kombucha. They were also one of the first to open a taproom, which is one of the biggest things that makes Rowdy Mermaid special. Operating much like a craft brewery’s taproom, the Rowdy Mermaid taproom features special recipes and seasonal releases. Rowdy Mermaid bottles, distributes and sells their popular main line-up of products, such as their Living Ginger (a favorite of Dunn’s), Flower Grow, Rowdy Belly, Autumn Haze and Smoky Badger, and they also have special taproom releases, such as the Coconut Lemongrass, which they tapped in early March. These taproom releases continuously include ever-unique creations, such as the Pineapple Turmeric, making these creative and inventive beverages available and accessible to the public.
Kombucha is not an alcoholic beverage by definition. In the coming year, however, Rowdy Mermaid will continue to cater to their adult audience by beginning to produce alcoholic kombucha drinks. Rowdy Mermaid is the first kombucha business in the region to have a license to create and distribute alcoholic kombucha, and this year will see them partnering with local breweries to continue developing interesting and delicious products for the Boulder community.
Rowdy Mermaid’s taproom hours are Wednesday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. RowdyMermaid.com
